I have always been interested in how the internet got its start as far as the history behind it and the people who contributed to it. Because there is so much detail and techical terminology, this got me thinking about how confusing it would be if a child tried to understand the internet’s origins, so I decided to write an online children’s book to explain the concepts I learned after watching a National Geographic/BBC documentary about the history of the internet called Digits Connecting to the Future. This documentary is a very interesting look at the origins of the internet as well as the future of the interent.

Process:

  • I started out taking notes about the historical dates and influential people who contributed to the creation of the internet we see today while viewing the documentary.
  • I didn’t go into the future of the internet, becuase I wanted to leave that up to the reader’s perception of what they think the internet will be
  • I then decided how I was going to write this story. Was I going to just translate the facts I learned into more understandable terms or acutally make a story a child can relate to or find interesting?
  • I decided to make a story about an alien’s whose job it is to observe Earth, but has to come down and figure out why the internet is such a big part of the human’s lives
  • Drew main characters
  • I then found a website where I could create my story so that it would be visible on an online platform or at least if reader has link and used clipart to go along with the text and direct images from documentary when story goes into historical background of the interent
